Alex Ryerson

Issue date: 4/24/06 Section: News
On Friday, April 14th, the GSB hosted its annual fund raising auction to raise money for the Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club, YES Reading, and Build. Organized by Betsy Haley, Sandy Huang, Sarah Fox, Bill Bowles, Wing-yan Choi, Tia Lendo, and Alex Ryerson, the auction lived up to its status as one of the premier events of the school year. More than 300 items and 500 hours of volunteer time went into this year's event, which raised a record $125,000 dollars for charity. MBA1 Alex Ryerson was asked (i.e., forced) to share a first-hand account of the thrills and spills of this year's auction, and how the GSB was able, once again, to "do it for the kids."

March 30: 63 donations. 63 %&@#! donations?! After the donations team sent about 1,000 e-mails, this is all we have to show for our effort. We were trying to get all of the donations in before spring break. We are going to come in way short of last year's 280 donations and $92,000 raised. Sarah Fox and I start to get a bit worried. I begin to feel as though I had this easy job and somehow botched it up-like Colin Quinn on Weekend Update. Unfortunately, I don't have "Ken Ober's sidekick on 'Remote Control'" on my resume to cheer me up and remind me of the "good times."

April 1: Good day. 50 new donations come in. This is a start. Our first goal is to hit $50,000. Our team worked to include the Board Fellows organizations, but they do not get any funding unless we get above $50,000 in proceeds. I now understand how Michael Keaton felt in "Gung Ho" when he agreed to a deal with his boss (Gedde Watanabe) for a big union bonus, but only if his factory could produce the impossible 15,000 Assan Motor cars in one month. (As an aside, is there any actor that has made a smoother cinematic transition from foreign exchange student who barely speaks English to high-powered corporate officer at Assan Motor Vehicles to game show host on "Wheel of Fish" than Watanabe? I mean, going from Long Duk Dong to Kazihiro to Kuni is no easy task. But I digress…)
