This year's C4C Weekend will long be remembered for the very sad and unfortunate loss of one of our peers, Michael Johnson, a first-year student at the Paul Merage School of Business at UC-Irvine.
As has been reported previously by several sources, paramedics rescued Johnson after he nearly drowned in a pool at the Avery Aquatic Center on Sunday morning, April 17th, while participating in an inner-tube water polo match that is part of the C4C Weekend competition. A lifeguard and paramedics administered CPR before Johnson was taken by ambulance to the Stanford Medical Center. Surrounded by his immediate family, friends, classmates and administrators from UC-Irvine, Johnson passed away at the medical center six days later, on Saturday, April 23rd.
Immediately following this accident, student leaders cancelled all remaining scheduled events and sent students from the eight participating business schools home. A staff reporter recently sat down with Stanford's C4C student leaders to collect additional information about the accident and its implications for the C4C organization going forward.
Question 1: As the students closest to this event, what more can you share about what happened that day?
Answer 1: Unfortunately, there is nothing more we can share beyond what has already been published or distributed to our student body via email from the GSB administration. A coroner's investigation has been initiated; however, all information related to this investigation is private and will only be released at the discretion of Michael's immediate family. We understand that this lack of information is somewhat frustrating - we all wish we could know more about what exactly happened - but it is important that we all respect the nature of this investigative process as well as the privacy of Michael's family. Our administration will release any and all information to our community when it becomes available.
Question 2: Can you share anything about how you responded to this situation? What did you do when this happened?
