Best Place to People Watch
Cafe Borrone
1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park
(650) 327-0830
Whether you’re looking for the trendy or trying to find the real-life version of a facebook photo at The Birds, Palo Alto has plenty of people-watching places. The crowd at Cafe Borrone takes home the gold in this category. Pluto’s is great for scouting out the body conscious. Swensen’s Ice Cream on university sports a balcony with a great "bird watching" view. And Tresidder Union is always a good place to spot some of Stanford’s famous undergrads.
Best Place for a Discreet First Date
If you’ve met someone within the GSB, the best advice is to probably go anywhere at least 100 miles outside of the Bay Area. But if that’s too much effort, then try out Woodside Bakery (on Woodside Road, next to Bucks) - fantastic food, homey atmosphere, a fireplace, and reasonable prices. Rarely a GSBer to be found.
Alternatively, you could always try very public Lower Arbuckle in the hope that folks would not suspect you were on a date. Although we suspect your date would be less than impressed with the venue.
A romantic, but distant spot: Bella Saratoga. In the city, there is the Cheesecake Factory. You’ll be surrounded by tourists. Nice view too.
Best Place for a Blatant First Date
Pluto’s
482 University Avenue, Palo Alto
(650) 853-1556
And if you're just happy to have a date, and want the world to know it, try a blatant location such as Pluto’s, or a Tuesday night dinner at that week’s FOAM location. Anywhere on University is guaranteed to be blatant, as well as Jackson and Arbuckle. But of course, if you ever considered taking a date to Jackson or Arbuckle, it’s no wonder you’re still single.
