The Birds

Between classes and meetings, “The Birds” is a GSB fixture. Other notables include: the CoHo, the Stanford Shopping Center, Schwab, FOAM, the Goose, the computer lab, Jackson Library, and virtually anywhere at the GSB. And of course, the quick e-mail access terminals and phones in Upper Arbuckle are another procrastination favorite.

Whether you are looking for yet another place to procrastinate, or searching for the perfect travel guide, Kepler’s is the place of choice for the well read among us. There is always, of course, the Stanford Bookstore, Books, Inc. (formerly Printer’s, Inc.) in Mountain View, Borders (on University), as well as old-reliable Amazon.com.

Best Kept Secrets

Depending on how “in the loop” you are, some of these may not come as a surprise. But for the rest of us, some of the best kept secrets of the GSB and Palo Alto include sleep and Jackson Library. The Thai Cafe, the Education School’s Café, the Arrillaga Sports Café, and the new Alumni Center Café are where most of us are missing out on good campus eats.

Looking off campus, there is the terrific Straits Café on El Camino. Folks may also be unaware of Ridge Vineyards - 20 minutes away with free weekend tastings and great wine. There is also Scores in Foster City – a terrific sports bar. They have three 3-story screens, great food, and a few dozen other TVs. There is also the K&L Wine Store in Atherton, which sells lots of great Bordeaux at surprising prices. Folks might also check out Ristorante Silan (Los Altos), Campo de Bocci (Los Gatos), and Luna Park on Valencia (SF). And for the New England Chowda Heads among us, there’s PJ’s in the Sunset in SF. A bit of a trek, but the Clam Chowder is worth it.
