Licia Maglietta charmingly depicts Rosalba’s story in Bread & Tulips

Italian film Pane e Tulipani is a light comedy in which the protagonist, Rosalba, looks for and realizes her freedom and independence. Rosalba has been taken for granted by her family. During their family vacation, she was accidentally left behind. Instead of going home directly, she decided to hitchhike her way to Venice – a place she’s never been. This suddenly opened a door of adventure and exciting new life.

The storyline itself is a little bit cheesy and unbelievable. But the spirit of the film is very much endearing. It greatly contrasts the warm bohemia in Rosalba’s life in Venice to the materially sufficient but boring bourgeois life in Pescara. The melancholy waiter and the masseuse also convey the theme of how opportunities always knock on your door, and you just have to open it.

Besides the spirit, what really makes this an adorable film is the impeccable supporting cast. Everyone in the film leaves the audience with a strong impression. We almost feel like they are our friends and neighbors whom we’ve known for years.

Overall, as long as you don’t have to make sense of every single details of the movie, this is a great feel-good movie to lighten up your days.
