Each of us has heard the horror stories of the weakening job market: rescinded offers, moved start dates, companies going belly up, but how is the GSB being affected? We decided to talk with Kelly Walsh, Assistant Director of the Career Management Center (CMC) to find out what changes they've seen.

The balance of power definitely has shifted from the students to the recruiters. This change has manifested itself in several ways. Second years probably have already noticed that for some companies, resumes alone are no longer acceptable and cover letters are now required

The CMC has also seen that a few companies are requiring students to submit cover letters and resumes directly through specific company websites. While the CMC is working with these firms to encourage them to use the CMC process to increase ease of use and consistency, students should follow the firms' application process in order to have the best chance of obtaining an interview.

Additionally, while second years officially have until January 31 to accept an offer, and first years until March 31, companies are much more likely to encourage students to accept or decline the offer before the deadline.

While the traditional large investment banks and consulting firms are still coming to campus, it's too early in the process to forecast the hiring needs of companies in other industries such as high tech and venture capital..

So far, the number of companies currently scheduled to recruit on campus is down more than 50% compared to last year. Many companies have chosen to hire mostly from their summer intern pools and are doing much less on campus recruiting. However, a number of companies, especially technology companies, still don't know their hiring needs and are pushing their recruiting to later in the year and can't yet confirm a time to come. Also, there is a significant group of companies who have had their travel budget cut and who can't afford to come to Stanford. The CMC is encouraging all of these companies to use the recruiting email distribution service and is working with them to find innovative ways to recruit at the GSB without having to physically come to campus, such as using video conferencing.

Also, the CMC is working with companies that have been disappointed in the past with low Meet-the-Company (MTC) turnout to come to industry MTCs. Right now the CMC is trying to organize separate manufacturing, health care, and consumer products MTCs, which will be announced as soon as they reach critical mass.

So what advice does the CMC have for job-hunting students? "Go back to basics. Start with self-assessment in order to focus on what it is you want to do. Do your research and explore. Once you're focused, set some goals and create an action plan. Be prepared and do your homework. Learn how to write effective cover letters and resumes, and how to interview successfully. Utilize the many CMC resources throughout your process and call on us for help."

Given all the new faces at the CMC, and that we will want to turn to them for help, we thought it useful to review who everyone is and what they do.
