As many of you may be aware, especially those who spent the summer combing dumpsters for food scraps, we may face a slightly more challenging recruiting environment this year. To those of you who have expressed concern to me personally, I would refer you to Dean Joss’s reassuring email of August 10, in which he noted that “54% of the Class of 2001 either has a job, or a strong lead, or has heard of a company or industry of some kind where they might want to work.” I agree with the Dean’s assertion that these results place us at or near the top of our peer group, business schools in the greater Palo Alto area.

Indeed, encouraging news has transpired since that email was sent out. I have of course been keeping in touch with the 46% of the Class of 2001 that is still unemployed and I can tell you, in all sincerity, that these people do not deserve jobs. The rest of you should have nothing to worry about.

There are some inspiring stories to be heard from our recent graduates concerning their job searches. For example, I recently received email from J.D. Moriarty, MBA 2001, telling me that he had finally landed a long-term position at Papa Murphy’s Take-N-Bake Pizza. As J.D. tells it, “I finally realized that I was being unrealistically precise with my desire for employment in banking or consulting or some kind of job that doesn’t require me to wear a uniform. After perusing the alumni database, I selected several firms to target intensively, and eventually received an offer from Papa Murphy’s. I now have the satisfaction not only of a great job, but the knowledge that I am helping consumers save money, by encouraging them to bake their own pizzas at home.”

My advice to the Classes of 2002 and 2003, then, is to take solace in J.D.’s experience, and realize that you, too, can land a job next year, if you are willing to be realistic about your sad prospects. In the meantime, be assured that the CMC is doing everything it can in this difficult period. Specifically, we are moving the CMC office to an unspecified location in another state. Thank you for your understanding.
