As the first-year students pile onto campus full of verve and optimism, trying to find their ways between S182 and S171, courageously ordering complex sandwiches and burritos in Arbuckle, the second-years ooze back to the GSB like an unsuccessfully eradicated slime mold, grimly noting the enthusiasm with which their junior colleagues snap up copies of Teamwork: A Guide for Suckers.
It need not be so. With the public spirit for which The Reporter is famed, we sent a crack team of reporters to fan out through the second-year class in search of the wisdom which they wish had been provided to them by their own elders.
“Most tests at the GSB have a maximum point total of one hundred, or even more.” -- Adam Wegel
“It’s better to face forwards in class, towards the professor.” -- David Landry
“If the economy stays this bad, you might want to think about ways to spend more years in school, like a joint degree. I'm doing a JD/MBA right now, but if things don't pick up by 2004, I might have to add an MD in there. So I'm taking organic chemistry this quarter.” -- Frances Hsieh
“Interviewers don’t want to hear cases analyzed with the Four-I framework.” -- Sarah Elk
“Dean Joss and Professor Jost are entirely different people. I had some really embarrassing moments. Don’t make the same mistake.” -- Jim Cassidy
“I wish I’d learned earlier how incredibly competitive the GSB is. People will do anything to get that last H or HP in the curve, and you've got to be ready. I encrypt and back up all my files every night, and I take most of my class notes in a secret code I've developed. I would also recommend covering doors and windows with mats to prevent eavesdropping when your study group meets.” -- Sanjay Datta
“Most exams here are photocopied on both sides.” -- Matt Mooney
